I learned to cook in my mother’s kitchen. She was and still is a tough teacher and a fastidious cook, but has the talent of turning everything (not just cooking) into a fun activity. When I was growing up, my Mom would make me laugh so hard, I would end up snorting my yoghurt drink through my nose. Perhaps this would explain my fierce love for yoghurt.
When I was five, my Mom gave me a children’s cook book, called “Let’s Play and Cook” and shortly thereafter my parents came home to a battlefield of a kitchen, with me proudly displaying a couple of deviled eggs, stuffed tomatoes and two “crocodiles” made of cucumbers. That was the epic beginning. My cooking (and cleaning up) abilities have improved marginally since then, but I’ll always be a sous-chef in my mother’s kitchen. I still have that cook book (somewhat worse for wear) and intend to pass it to my children, together with my love for cooking.
There are several crucial things I learned about cooking from my Mom:
- Healthy food is delicious;
- Herbs and spices make for great flavours;
- Food should be a feast for the palate, as well as for the eyes.
Most importantly, I learned that serving people good food is more than just feeding them: it’s a form of love, and just like my Mom, I love feeding people.

Hi, thanks for visiting our blog–as you may have seen we are lawyers too (or two of us, and the third married to one)! I used to live in London (working in a similar situation, in fact, very curiously!) and some time before that DC so we’ve sort of been on similar road I think.
Hi Sara, thanks for your comment. Our life paths seem to weave similar patterns, but the coincidences don’t stop there. Like you, I am a foreign language aficionado and love international travel. Prague is fantastic! I’ve only visited. Apart from the US East Coast and London, and our current stint in Singapore, I’ve lived in Kyoto, Bergen, Lagos and Tripoli (in the distant past). What a great idea to make foods related to your travels! Thank you for your delicious ideas! Assia
I’ve nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award. http://alamanach.com/2011/12/11/the-versatile-blogger-award/
Thank you, Alamanach, a big compliment coming from you.
Hi Assia, reading your bio I see that you having been living the life that I desire to. Keep up the travels, stay in good health, have lots of fun, and share it all with us. LOL…Hershey
Hi Hershey, thank you for your kind comment and the good wishes. I enjoyed your fashion tips. Assia

Thank you, Chris!
I’ve just been pottering around your blog, and enjoying every minute. I’ve eaten a few Bulgarian dishes, and looking at some of your recipes it reminds me of all the connections (in terms of food) that that part of the world has with say Greece. I can see I’ll be back for more!
Thank you for your kind words! Yes, you are right, Bulgarian cuisine shares a lot with Greek and other Mediterranean cuisines. Where have you eaten Bulgarian dishes? Do you remember what they were?
I was going to comment on your most recent post then as I scrolled through your blog I realized I wanted to comment on every post. Well done and beautiful!
Thank you for your kind comment. I am glad you have enjoyed my blog! Your blog is also very well written and inspiring!
I thought I would have a look about your blog, I enjoyed your post on Wine day and the recipe looked very nice as well. I will be following your blog now.
Thank you for visiting, Russell, and for your kind comments!
Assia, I love the way you showcase your photographs. It’s like photographs framed within a larger frame. Very nicely done. I like your menus. I don’t eat meat, although I do cook it (and suprisingly, I don’t have to taste it), but some of what you shared will definitely please the carnivores in the family.
Thank you for the kind message, Brainy. I’m glad you like my menus. Some of my recipes such as my fricassee and my potato stew can easily be adapted for vegetarians. I hope they work out for your family too! Thanks for reading!
You’ve been nominated for the 7×7 Award!

Hi Yael,

Public opinion seems divided between Laurent Bernard Chocolatier and Canele Patisserie Chocolaterie.

Hello Assia! Your photographs are nice and crisp. What sort of camera do you use? I’m just currently using my mobile and I just edit them before they go in my posts. Still can’t decide what to get. Anyway your beauty too reminds me of Filipino Spanish mestizas that’s why I thought you were one. Great blog!
Hi, Ann! Thank you for stopping by my blog and for your kind comments! I’m using a Nikon D300. Please let me know what camera you end up choosing! Thank you for the compliment – I know mestizas are famous for their beauty – but, as you’ve probably guessed, I’m Bulgarian!
I’m pleased you like my blog! Best, Assia
Sometimes when I think about travelling, I wouldn’t wanna cuddle a dslr with me around. But with the picture quality it gives you, it’s just hard to resist it. I’ve been eyeing on Canon G12 and they say it’s a pro’s back up but still.. Anyway yeah will do let you know
You’ve got a nice space.
I think it’s a hoot that we both work in the legal industry. I’m an environmental and land use paralegal at a large firm in New York City.
Thank you for visiting and for your kind comment – always nice to hear from a colleague! Good luck with your blog as well!
Hi, you have some recipes over here I’d definitely like to try. And some beautiful pictures, too
Thank you for visiting – I’m pleased you’re enjoying my blog, and hope to read something new by you soon!
I come from a Greek background and so can relate to your delicious recipes. The feta cheese pie reminds me of my mum’s recipe. Mmmm.
Hi, Angela! Oh, yes, I know tyropita and I love Greek cuisine too. Very close to home
I’m jealous of your worldliness and I aspire to your food photography:)
Hi, Marietta. Thank you for visiting and for your kind comments! I think you chocolate Guinness cupcakes are to die for!

Thank you for visiting and for your kind comment! I’m pleased you enjoy my blog! Please let me know if you end up making the apple pie!
Hello Assia! I live vicariously through you, my dear!! Your pictures are FANTASTIC and the food, well, they’re a travel log in and of themselves!! I have to agree about how wonderful the apple pie sounds and looks!! I don’t have just a sweet “tooth” I have sweet “teeth” and they all want fed!!! I love working with phyllo sheets whether sweet or savory. Thank you so much for letting us all come along with you. Please keep up the great job and I look so forward to seeing more!! Happy trails!!
Hi, Cathy! What a wonderful message – thank you, you made my day! I’m so pleased you like my blog, my pictures and my recipes! I agree with you, phyllo pastry is great to work it – you can make all sorts of delicious fillings for it and the oven does the rest! I hear you on the sweet teeth issue – I’m having a hard time keeping up with my sweet teeth’s demands as well. I finally gave up yesterday and made a very sweet surprise, which I’ll share later today. I very much enjoy your blog as well – you have so many delicious recipes and helpful tips on all sorts of things! Look forward to reading more from you! Best, Assia

You seem like such an amazing, interesting and inspiring person. I hope to gain more from following you …Love the dragon fruit post. And amazing photography! Do you do that yourself?
Thank you! I appreciate your kind comments! I’m so pleased you like my photographs. I do all my photographs myself! It’s a constant process or learning and appreciation of light, textures, colours and composition! Your photographs are beautiful too, do you do them yourself?
Oh yes, I do the pictures myself, and thank you. My lovely boyfriend is a photographer, so I have taken a bit of an interest in it. It is fun!
Your stories are quite fascinating! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Karen! I’m so pleased you like my narratives! Thank you for visiting!

You’re very welcome!
I really enjoy your blog so I nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award. More information at http://remcooks.com/2012/04/02/versatile-blogger-award/. Happy Blogging.
What a lovely blog! You seem like someone I might have went to college with…it was an international school in London and everyone had a “grew up here” but “lived here” and “speak 4 languages” kind of story! Aloha.
Aloha to you too! Are you living in Hawaii? Oh, interesting – how long did you live in London, which school did you go to? It’s such a small world!
What’s your name? I’d like to nominate you for an award!
My name is Carmen. I went to Richmond American International University in London from 2000-02. It was an amazing place where I met the best friends of my life. And lived in a pub (literally) so learned lots of things there too!
Good News! You have been nominated for the Versatile Blogger award!
http://acorninmykitchen.wordpress.com/2012/04/03/versatile-blogger-award/
Thank you for the honour!
My pleasure.
How do you have time to blog as a lawyer? My husband is a lawyer with no time, I am assuming blogging is on top of your priority list and have a passion for it. You are very creative and smart!
Thank you so much for your kind comments! Yes, I’ve turned my cooking, photography and blogging into a priority these days, it’s a full-time job, for sure!
Yes, it helps when you enjoy it too.
You’re a feta cheese addict! No wonder you liked my post
I just briefly checked out your front page and saw that and I thought to myself, wow what a coincidence!
Yes, I’m afraid the Bulgarian in me speaks very loudly, especially at meal times
So glad you stopped by! All best, Assia
So delighted you stopped by and ‘introduced’ yourself. Clearly I am going to enjoy visiting around here! You have lived life in a much larger world (literally and virtually) than I have thus far and I know I’ll delight in learning from your adventures!
Warmest regards,
Kathryn
